Do you really need to go to college if you have to take out student loans?

Universities you go into debt to attend are not the same as universities you attend on a whim

I believe there are universities worth going into debt for, but I think 'universities you borrow to attend for no clear reason' are almost always a miss. If you can't articulate how your desired options (type of work, income, location) would be nearly impossible or severely delayed without a degree, then the right stance is to first work and explore alternative paths, and only borrow as an investment if it becomes truly necessary.

Scholarships are 'debt,' so decide based on whether they pay off as an investment.

Whether a university you want to attend is worth going into debt for should be decided by calmly calculating the 'return on investment.' I think you should roughly estimate the university/department you want to attend and the assumed annual income, and if the total debt at graduation fits within 1โ€“2 years of take-home pay, it's reasonable; if it exceeds that by a large margin, it would be more rational to choose cheaper tuition options plus skill acquisition (programming, English, certifications) and go with that strategy.
